Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan Inaugurates SPARK-COIL Smart Classroom with Lisa Tech

Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan marked a milestone in technology-enhanced and globally connected learning with the blessing and inauguration of its new SPARK-COIL Smart Classroom on October 15, 2026.

The new learning space was created to support collaborative online international learning, giving educators and students more opportunities to connect, collaborate, and learn across institutions and borders.

The event brought together members of the Xavier University community, higher education representatives, and project partners. University President Fr. Mars P. Tan, SJ, and Commission on Higher Education OIC Regional Director Dr. Leo D. Camposano, CESE, delivered messages during the occasion. The blessing of the new classroom was led by University Chaplain Fr. Ruben JR B. Orbeta, SJ.

Lisa Tech Founder & CEO Elijah John Lao was also present, together with internationalization officers from higher education institutions across Region 10 and university administrators from different academic units.

A Smart Classroom Built for Collaborative Online International Learning

The SPARK-COIL Smart Classroom is designed to support educators in conducting Collaborative Online International Learning, or COIL, by creating a more connected environment for digital interaction, shared instruction, and collaboration.

Rather than treating technology as a separate element in the learning process, the classroom brings digital tools into an environment where educators can use them as part of everyday teaching and international collaboration.

Through connected classroom technology, faculty and students can work with partner institutions, share ideas, engage in collaborative activities, and participate in learning experiences that extend beyond the physical campus.

This kind of environment is especially important for programs that aim to strengthen internationalization while making global learning opportunities more accessible to students.

Supporting the SPARK-COIL Project

The Smart Classroom forms part of the wider SPARK-COIL Project, an initiative co-funded by the European Union.

The project supports collaborative online international learning and helps participating institutions build environments that encourage cross-border academic exchange, digital collaboration, and stronger connections among students and educators.

For Lisa Tech, supporting SPARK-COIL means helping partner schools create Smart Classroom environments that make these forms of collaboration easier to carry out in practice.

Technology becomes most valuable when it supports the people using it. In a COIL environment, that means helping educators facilitate discussion, present digital content, collaborate with partner institutions, and connect learners across different locations.

Bringing Globally Connected Learning to Life

A globally connected classroom is not defined by technology alone.

It depends on how educators use the space to create opportunities for interaction, dialogue, and shared learning.

The Xavier University SPARK-COIL Smart Classroom gives faculty a dedicated environment where international collaboration can be integrated into teaching activities more naturally.

It also gives students a space where they can engage with peers, perspectives, and learning experiences beyond their immediate campus.

By strengthening the physical and digital environment around COIL, institutions can create more opportunities for students to develop communication, collaboration, digital, and intercultural skills.

Technology Designed Around Educators

Lisa Tech approaches Smart Classroom projects by looking at how educators and students will actually use the space.

For collaborative and hybrid learning environments, this means considering how teachers present content, communicate with remote participants, move between different activities, and keep students engaged throughout a session.

The objective is not simply to add more equipment to a classroom.

It is to create an environment where technology can support teaching, collaboration, and connectivity without adding unnecessary complexity for educators.

This principle is especially important in international learning environments, where reliable and practical technology helps make the collaboration itself the focus.

Celebrating the Xavier University Community

The blessing and inauguration brought together educators, administrators, higher education representatives, and project partners to mark the opening of the new classroom.

The occasion also highlighted the role of institutional collaboration in building more connected learning environments.

Lisa Tech is grateful to Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan and the SPARK-COIL community for the opportunity to support this initiative through Smart Classroom systems designed for collaborative and globally connected learning.

Supporting Connected Learning Across the Philippines

The Xavier University project also forms part of a wider SPARK-COIL journey involving school partners working toward more dynamic, connected, and internationally collaborative learning environments.

For Lisa Tech, these projects demonstrate how Smart Classroom systems can support institutions that want to expand learning beyond the traditional classroom and create stronger connections with academic communities in the Philippines and abroad.

As more schools explore collaborative online international learning, technology will continue to play an important supporting role in making these experiences accessible, practical, and engaging for educators and students.

Lisa Tech looks forward to supporting more institutions as they build learning environments designed for collaboration, connectivity, and the future of education.
